Hello all. I'm very glad to be joining this forum. I'm excited to start talking with other people who are as interested in digital photography as I have become in the last couple months. I'm the very proud owner of an Olympus C-8080. I worked hard for the summer for the sole purpose of buying this camera. I pretty much lived off of the information on these forums and in the dpreview reviews to decide what camera I would buy. It is my first digital camera, and certainly the first real professional-type camera I've ever used (now I can't imagine ever trying to go back to using a point-and-shoot camera again).

But now, having entered the exciting world of digital photos head first, I want to start sharing what I've done -- and get some critical feedback from those who are far more experienced than I.

I've only VERY recently gotten into photography (and even then, it's only for fun) so I don't know too much yet. So I need some technical help on photography basics.

Below are some pictures I took today out my window of the sunset. The first is taken at 1/250 sec, f/4.0. The second, taken a few minutes later (though it certainly doesn't look like it's later than the first), is at 1/20 sec, f/5.0, EV+1. While I was mostly interested in the sky, I also really liked the orange light that was being cast on the trees (shown in the cropped third image), and the depth shown in the atmosphere as the trees approached the horizon.

I know it's basically a fundamental difference between photography and the way the eyes see, and I will always have to compromise, BUT... is there any way to try to capture both the beautiful clouds and the beautiful light on the trees in the same shot? What I saw out my window looked great, but I wish I could get what I saw to show in a single photo.

Perhaps it's not exactly possible, but any insight for this beginner would be wonderful. Thanks. I included the last shot just for fun, it was taken just a little bit after the others.

and taken a little bit later

this one's for free, enjoy
